History of Fathers Day

Fathers Day is an annual event which is celebrated on different dates in different countries in different ways. Mostly Fathers day is celebrated on Third Sunday of June in many countries every year. This year Fathers Day falls on 18 June 2017.

In some other places like Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fathers Day is celebrated on First Sunday of September. In some places like Iceland, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Scandinavia, Finland, Fathers day is celebrated on Second Sunday of November.

While in some countries Argentina, Netherlands, Canada, India, Chile, France, Malta, Japan, Greece, South Africa, United States of America and United Kingdoms, Fathers Day is celebrated on Third Sunday of June.

Mothers Day is celebrated to honor Mother and Motherhood and Fathers Day is celebrated to honor Father and Fatherhood. Fathers Day is also called Fathering Sunday.

History of Father’s Day

The First Fathers Day was celebrated on 5 July 1908 in Fairmont,West Virginia by Grace Golden Clayton. It was celebrated as a memorial of her father and all the fathers who lost their lives on the Monongah Mining Disaster took place in December 1907.

Later on July 19 1910, Fathers Day was celebrated at YMCA in Spokane,Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her Father was a civil war veteran named William Jackson Smart,was a single parent who raised his six children there. She was the first to propose the idea after hearing about Jarvis Mothers Day.She told that Fathers too should have similar holiday like Mothers Day.

she suggested June 5 to be celebrated as fathers day every year as it was her father’s birthday,but the celebration was deferred to Third Sunday in June.But this was not officially declared after struggling out for this,In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued,the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers,designating the Third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later in 1972, that day President Richard signed a law declaring National Holiday.
